Question:

what will happen with the retention factor, separation factor, resolution and theoretical plates if a longer column is used.

Answers

If a longer column is used than-

theoretical plates depends on the column length. It can be determined by the formula.

N= L/H

Where N is no. Of theoretical plates, L= column length, H= height of each plate.

Therefore if a longer column is used ,the number of theoretical plates increases.

Retention factor is actually , How much time a component spend in a stationary phase in comparison of non retained inert compound. Generally it doesn't depends on column length instead of retention Time.

Separation factors increases as the longer column is used in any chromatography technique

Resolution is actually, the ability to separate two peaks .it also increases as the longer column is used in chromatography.
