Alcohol and drug abuse puts a person at physical, mental, and social risk. Drugs and alcohol affect the normal physiology of the body. It causes respiratory, circulatory and neurological distress. It damages vital organs like liver, brain, and heart. Mentally, a person starts showing psychotic behavior, and suffers from emotional stress, anxiety, and depression.

Alcohol and drug abuse make a person dependent on these things.

The ability of the person to make judgement gets affected. Alertness, body coordination and reflexes are affected by drug and alcohol use. It puts the person and his family at risk of financial stress, and disturbs the personal life.

Alcohol and drug abused person become involved in illegal activities and are threat to society. They become violent more easily and promote domestic and social violence. Drug abused people are less productive and cannot support in community welfare.

They may become involved in illegal-drug marketing and break the laws. These people also become involved in illegal sex activities and spread STDs like AIDS. They have low-life expectancy.

In case of use of illegal drugs, one can face arrest. Drug abused people have more health care needs and pose extra monetary costs to family and community.

According to the data by National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 2015, 15 million people (above the age 18) are affected by alcohol use disorder and it causes approximately 6 deaths per day.
