(d) Any projectile motion consists of two parts of journey –

(i) From initial position to reach at the maximum height of the trajectory.

(ii) From the maximum point of the trajectory to the final point of the trajectory.

Now, if the initial point and the final point of the projectile are at the same level then what will happen?

You will have –

Time taken by the projectile to cover the distance from initial point to maximum point of the trajectory will be equal to the time taken by the projectile to cover the distance from maximum point to the finish point of the trajectory.

Let us consider –

t1 = Time taken by the projectile to cover the distance from initial point to maximum point of the trajectory

and

t2 = the time taken by the projectile to cover the distance from maximum point to the finish point of the trajectory.

From above we learn that –

t1 = t2------------------------------------------------(a)

Now, total time of flight of the projectile, T = t1 + t2

Apply equation (a) –

T = 2t1 = 2t2

Therefore, we multiply by 2 with the time taken by the projectile to reach at the maximum height from its initial position(T = 2t1).

You can also determine the total time of flight by multiplying the time taken by the projectile to reach at the finish point from its maximum height by 2. (T = 2t2).

I hope you understand the explanation.
