We have many ways by which time of different things e.g, rocks, animals, plants, fossils, geomorphic structures and in general of earth can be measured before the ascent of man. We use the Salinity in oceans (rate of accumulation of salt in sea water considering all the oceanic waters as being fresh at the formation of crust); Rate of Cooling of Earth (considering all of lithosphere as being molten 4.5 billion years ago and subsequent gradual and steady cooling after maintaining the thermal inputs from radioactive pockets and other sources); Radiometric Dating (in which different radioactive isotope species of dozens of elements decay at their respective time frames; usually measured after every half-life; where the remaining size of stable daughter products post-decay is measured.e.g,  K-Ar dating; U-Pb dating; Sm-Nd dating; Rb-Sr dating; Radiocarbon dating etc); Stratigraphy (analyzing the sequence and pattern of different rock stratas and geological remains in a superimposed succession); Paleontology (study of fossils; with sub-branches like taphonomy, ichnology); Paleothermometry (study of ancient or past temperature regimes via different climatic proxies); Paleogeography (study of past geography); Paleo-chemistry (study of past composition of rocks, ice-cores,fauna and flora); Rate of Decelerating rotation of earth; Thermoluminescence (using light signatures to detect the date of ancient artifacts) and dozens of other relative as well as absolute dating techniques.
