17 a) Phenol is soluble in NaOH because it form phenoxide ion with NaOH which is soluble in NaOH but cyclohexanol is not much acidic and thus less soluble in NaOH.

b) Only methyl carbonyl give yellow precipitate with iodine in NaOH and ethanol easily oxidize into ethanal in presence of NaOH and iodine but propanal (on oxidation of propanol) does not contain methyl carbonyl and thus don't give yellow precipitate.
