Examine the countries where your company does business according to where theyrank on the Hofstede cultural dimensions. Think of some examples of how a U.S. managerwould need to modify his or her behavior when communicating with associates from one ormore of these foreign countries.

Telefónica operates in several countries. For this project, the United States, Spain, and Brazil are the subjects of analysis. This answer provides examples of how U.S.

Managers would need to address their behavior in Spain and Brazil. According to the Hofstede cultural dimensions, Spain’s rank differs significantly from theU.S. in the categorical dimensions of Individualism, Masculinity, Uncertainty Avoidance, and Indulgence. As an example, an U.S. manager in Spain will not have to place strong emphasis on employee cohesion and teamwork because Spain ranks high in collectivism and team work is their preferred operating method.

Spain ranks more as a collectivist society versus the U.S. 7

PORTFOLIO PROJECT FINAL Individualism. Another example, is U.S. managers consulting employees about their opinion concerning a work related decision prior to making a decision. It benefits U.S.

Manager to confer with the employees. In the U.S., managers don’t regularly consult subordinates. Brazil’s rank differs significantly from the U.S. in the categorical dimensions of Power Distance, Individualism, and Uncertainty Avoidance. As an example, an U.S.

Manager in Brazil should apply caution in the way they talk to or treat older respected employees or co-workers. Just as in Spain, an U.S. manager in Spain will not have to place strong emphasis on employee cohesion and teamwork

Does your company have an exit strategy? Recall that exit strategies are to be determined before entry into the foreign market, rather than after entry.

The Starbucks Corporation’s exit strategies relies on the type of entry made into foreign markets. Commonly found as the mode of entry for Starbucks is joint ventures and licensee. By utilizing these modes of entry, Starbucks doctors an exit strategy that allows it to pull out, cut ties, or buy out of its licenses and/or ventures.

These strategies do not come without risks. In 2013 the Starbucks Corporation announced it would pay US $2.8 billion in damages to a com-pany that Starbucks terminated it's licensing agreement

Critically and objectively evaluate how ethical your company’s global operations are and determine if they are good corporate citizens (i.e., do they have a well thought-out corporate social responsibility program for the long term?)

According to the Starbucks Coffee Company website the corporation believes in having a positive impact on the communities they serve. Starbucks strives for investing in ethical sourced coffee, leading in green retail, creating employee development opportunities, and being part of the “neighborhood” that they serve. The Starbucks’ corporate social responsibility program is well though-out and is the main focus of the corporation. The company’s plan is to continue to work with farmers, partners, customers, and like-minded organizations to move the industry forward.

The corporation is looking to move it’s sourcing model toward greater sustainability, find new ways to minimize environmental footprint, and create new opportunities for people as in future. These claims are all seen in the corporate programs that Starbucks has implemented for its global partners and employees.

What is the corporate mission statement of your target company, assuming it has one? How well do the company’s actions adhere to its stated mission?

The Starbucks Corporation’s mission statement is, “To inspire and nurture the human spirit – one person, one cup and one neighborhood at a time”. This is a bold statement for global company. The vast differences among the countries of operation present a tremendous challenge; however, the Starbucks Corporation seems to adhere to its stated mission. The Starbucks Corporation has taken steps to change the way people see coffee.

The Starbucks Corporation has not only won many global awards for its innovation, ethical operations, admiration, and corporate equality, but it has become members of the community in places it operates. The company appears to adhere to the practice of acculturation and is poised for further success. One of the most interesting examples that supports Starbucks adherence to its mission statement by inspiring and nurturing the human spirit comes from China. In 1999 the United States accidentally bombed the Chinese embassy in Belgrade. Many American businesses suffered and were damaged by violent protestors but because Starbucks had integrated into the “neighborhood”, protestors cut through the Starbucks store and purchased coffee on their way to protesting at the US embassy

With respect to its strategy formulation, would you categorize your company as a shareholder model or a stakeholder orientation? Why?

In evaluating the Starbucks Corporation’s strategies, the company can be categorized as having a stakeholder orientation with respect to strategy formulation.

The company has employed several strategies to benefit its stakeholders such as its employees by implementing a free college plan and limiting job loss. The Starbucks Corporation focuses on its other stakeholders such as investors, suppliers, customers, and environmental agencies by incorporating corporate social responsibility movements into its business strategies to uphold its strong brand and positive corporate image
