Question:

Discuss the differences among four of the following types of medication administration: intravenous, intradermal, intraspinal, intra-arterial, intramuscular, and subcutaneous.

Answers

Intravenous: Within a vein; administering drugs or fluids directly into the vein to obtain a rapid or complete effect from the drug. This method has the fastest absorption rate

Intradermal:- Situated or applied within the skin. The volume of solution is limited to 0.1ml. The onset of action and rate of absorption form this route are slow

Intraspinal:- Introduced into the spinal column and especially the vertebral canal

Intra-arterial:- Injected into an artery.

Intramuscular:- Within the muscle. Typically, no more than 2.5ml (but up to 5ml depending on muscle mass).

This method is not as fast as IV administration but acts faster than oral medication.

subcutaneous:- Under the skin. The volume of medication administered by this route must be not more than 2ml. This method is not absorbed as well and has a slower onset of action than injections given by the IV or IM route
