Question:

Can you help me answer this three part question about lipids? The absorption of fatty acids from small intestines occurs with a combination of what? Is Fatty acid synthesis considered the reversal of Beta oxidation (Yes, exactly; or yes but not exactly), In addition, How many different (major) lipases act on hydrolyzing phosphatides?

Thanks!

Answers

the absorption of fatty acids from intestines occurs with a combination of cholesterol, fatty acids, phospholipids, monoglycerides, and diacylglycerols by forming mixed micelles which are soluble with bile acids. this is the key function of bile acids in the small intestine where they emulsify dietary fat to facilitate their digestion and absorption.

the two processes synthesis and beta oxidation are superficially the reverse of one another. but there are some differences between them

synthesis beta oxidation
cytoplasm mitochondria
NADPH NAD and FAD
multifunctional enzymes separate enzymes

different lipases act on hydrolyzing phosphatides are : triacylglycerol, cholesterol ester, phospholipid
