Backgrouund: Material Safety Data Sheets have been prepared for each commercially available chemical compound. There are several sources for MSDS information. In our lab we have hard copies in yellow MSDS binders. We also have the Aldrich Chemical Catalog, the CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics, and the Merck Index. Using a search engine, you can also enter the chemical name along with "MSDS." Also, when looking up a particular compound, make sure that you are getting the actual compound of interest and not one of its derivatives. Read the names carefully! Directions: For each of the following compounds, look up the information requested, including units. 1. Aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) CAS number (a unique identifying number for each compound: 30-78 Molecular formula C9 Hoy oy CH3COOC6H4 Cool Melting point 134-136°C Toxicity (usually expressed as an LD, for a specific route of administration and a specific animal-list the route and animal as well) LD 50: 200 mg/kgirat LD SO250 mg kg maise Flammability and other handling Concems (ie, corrosive, irritant, target organs, etc.) 2.
