# Irritable bowel syndrome is a functional bowel disease characterized by chronic abdominal pain and altered bowel habits in absence of any organic cause . It affects the large intestine mostly the colon . It is of three types :-
- IBS -D ( Diarrhoea predominant)
- IBS -C(Constipation predominant )
- IBS -M (Mixed )
# Pathophysiology of IBS is not completely understood . Dysregulation in Brain -GI tract possibly results in :-
- abnormal GI motility
- visceral hypersensitivity
- CNS involvement
- autonomic response
- immune function
# The receptors which play a role in the pathophysiology :-
1. 5HT1P: Activation of intrinsic primary afferent neurons in enteric nervous system
2.
5HT3: Activation of dorsal root or crainial nerve afferent neurons --> Stimulate peristaltic activity
3. 5HT4: Stimulates release of acetylcholine and calcitonin --> Increase GI secretions and motility
