A patient is ordered cimetidine hydrochloride (Tagamet) 400 mg PO q 6 hours via gastrostomy tube. The cimetidine is dispensed as 300 mg per 10 mL. How many mL will the nurse administer for each dose? Record your answer using the nearest whole number. mL

Answers

ANSWER.

* Calculation of the amount(ml) of drug required.

Formula = Desired dose/Dose in hand * Quantity.

   Here

      Desired dose(D) = 400 mg.

      Dose in hand (H) = 300 mg.

          Quantity(Q) = 10 ml.

As per formula

   Amount(ml) of drug required = D/H * Q

                                                   = 400/300 * 10

                                                   = 1.33 * 10

                                                   = 13.3

                                                   = 13 ml.
