The patient has two Jackson Pratt drains, and a removable rigid dressing was placed over the soft dressing after surgery. There is a large tourniquet at the bedside. There are also ace wraps and bandaging supplies at the bedside. (Learning Objectives 8 and 9) a. What is the rationale for the removable rigid dressing, and what is the role of the nurse when caring for the patient with this type of dressing? b. On what areas should nursing care for the patient in this case study focus?

Answers

Answer: The nurse initial action is to stop the bleeding at first. Then apply the ice pack as well as prepare the patient for X-Ray. The supporter should be applied to the fractured area.

Discharge instructions that the nurse will provide to the patient as:

  • The fractured area should be kept elevated, as arm should be supported by the pillow.
  • If necessary apply the ice pack to reduce the pain if occurs.
  • It is important to keep splint dry as well as clean.
  • Medication should be given as prescribed.

The rationale for using removable rigid dressing as it is generally applied as post operative dressing for knee amputation. The main purpose is that it control swelling as well as promote healing. Nurse should take care while applying the bandage as it should not be bulky.

The nurse should focus on the amputation as well as the knee immobilizer should be used to prevent movement.
