A finial is used to secure the fixture to a nipple. Below are the images of nipple and finial. A nipple is used to house the wires from the ceiling to the lighting, when the fixture is installed then on the top of the fixture a finial is installed to secure the fixture to the nipple. A fixture is secure housing to the lamp.

The bottom of the finial is rolled on the threads of the nipple to secure the fixture.
