It is made from very tough material from its surrounding. The weathering reduced the surrounding terrain, while the bedrock remained to witness for the history. --Also, volcanic eruptions have changed earth greatly. EX- Ash and sulfur went into Earth's atmosphere because of the Tambora eruption which dimmed incoming sunlight. It lowered global temperatures by about 3°F. The Mount Pinatubo of 1991 that erupted in the Philippines cooled the planet by about 1°F.
